WHO ARE WE (AS YOUTH WORKERS + HUMANS)?

Tell the story of your map through narrative writing, an audio narration, or video, and explain the “key moments” you have included. Discuss people, places, obstacles, experiences, and opportunities for each moment. You may also consider meanings--what did each moment mean to you? And feelings--how did you feel at each point in your map?

The "Where It All Began" picture captures one of my family's earliest trips to the United States, a moment that remains vivid in my memory. It was the first time I stood before the vastness of the ocean, an experience that left me in awe. Growing up in Russia, I had only ever seen lakes, and while they held their own beauty, the ocean felt grand in comparison. Its sheer size seemed endless, stretching beyond the horizon, and the rhythmic crashing of the waves made me feel small, yet deeply connected to something much larger. Even now, the ocean continues to inspire a sense of wonder in me, a reminder of how limitless the world can feel. That moment also marked the beginning of my love for swimming, as I was mesmerized by the ocean's boundless energy and the freedom it seemed to offer. The feeling of being in the water, surrounded by its immensity, sparked something in me that would eventually propel my desire to compete. It wasn’t just about swimming—it was about pushing myself, embracing challenges, and harnessing the power of the water. That early experience shaped my passion, driving me to pursue swimming at the collegiate level and commit to it with the same sense of astonishment and determination that I felt during that first encounter.

The "Nation's Capital" photo captures the pinnacle of my academic journey, representing the countless hours of research, late nights, and dedication that led to this moment. Standing in Washington, D.C., I had the privilege of sharing my ideas and findings with scholars from across the sociological field. It was a validation of all the hard work, seeing my research—once just concepts on paper—transform into a meaningful contribution to the broader academic community. Presenting in such a prestigious setting was not only the culmination of my academic efforts, but also a rewarding reminder that all the sacrifices had paid off.

The "Welcome to the Jungle" picture represents a defining part of my life beyond academics and athletics. Graduating from the Jungle Operations Training Course stands as my greatest achievement to date. The opportunity was incredibly competitive, and I faced doubts from many people along the way. Yet, despite the skepticism, I proved them wrong. Completing this rigorous course was not just about overcoming physical and mental challenges—it was about proving to myself that I could rise above any obstacle. The pride I felt in earning that Jungle Tab is something that can never be taken away from me. I did that—facing adversity head-on and coming out stronger on the other side. This accomplishment is mine, forever etched into the fabric of my journey. I remember standing on the graduation field in Hawaii, overwhelmed with a profound sense of pride and fulfillment. At that moment, I thought to myself, no one can ever take this away. The feeling went beyond mere achievement—it was a deep sense of ownership and confidence, knowing that I had pushed myself to the limit and succeeded. This milestone serves as a lasting reminder of my resilience and the inner strength it took to get there. No one handed me this opportunity—I earned it through unwavering determination, unfaltering dedication, and unyielding perseverance!

The final two photos, "Future Ma'am" and "Now They Say Congratulations," symbolize the exciting yet uncertain path ahead. In the Spring of 2025, my life will undergo a monumental shift as I graduate with my master’s degree and commission as a second lieutenant into active duty. This marks the beginning of a thrilling new chapter, filled with promise and opportunity, but it also brings a sense of apprehension. The uncertainty of a military career—leaving behind the familiarity of my current life for the unknown—feels daunting at times. Yet, it’s this very change that excites me, knowing that I’m stepping into a future where growth and leadership will be tested and honed in ways I’ve never experienced before.

  1. Anna, your writing is very poetic. Thanks for sharing your journey. It is incredible the many challenges you have taken on and have resulted in victories. That includes so many things from coming to the US, falling in love with swimming, sharing your ideas and letting them be known, to your enlistment in the military, and more. It is beautiful how you haven't allowed fear to stop you, if not it has been a fuel for you to push forward.
